Second Quarter Tribunal Statistics for 2016
The Ministry of Justice published the tribunal statistics bulletin early in September for the period April – June 2016. The bulletin is published quarterly and reports on important information relating to tribunals.
In 2013 fees were imposed for those making applications to the employment tribunal and this has had a significant impact on the number and type of applications submitted.
This quarter the bulletin reported that employment tribunals received 4,200 single claims and 11,600 multiple claims. This means single claims are down by 3% when compared to the same period last year and multiple claims are up by 38%.
The bulletin confirmed that 2,209 remission applications were submitted for the issue fee and 621 were submitted for the hearing fee. Remission applications are used by applicants who are eligible to a discount on tribunal fees or those who are entitled to a complete fee remission. Of the remission applications submitted, 64% of the applications were successful in full or in part for the initial issue fee and 86% of the applications submitted for the hearing fee were in some way successful. Both statistics represent an increase on the same period last year.
The bulletin suggests that 84% of applicants were represented by a lawyer in this quarter which is an increase of 9% on the same period last year.
