Competent Person Support

At Lighthouse, we help you to protect your business with our ‘Competent Person’ consultancy support service contracts.

Our agreements run for period s of 12, 24 or 36 months and encompass a number of services which will allow you to obtain advice and guidance ensuring your organisation is compliant with the relevant UK Health and Safety legislation.

Why is it called ‘Competent Person’?

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 state that:

‘Every employer shall appoint one or more competent persons to assist him in undertaking the measures he needs to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed upon him by or under the relevant statutory provisions’

Essentially, this means that all businesses should have access to competent advice and guidance and that this can either be an internal provision (an employee) or external (a consultancy or legal advisor).

By entering into a ‘Competent Person’ support contract with Lighthouse, you fulfil your duty as detailed above.

Lighthouse become integral to your organisation’s ability to understand its legal obligations, and implement management systems to become compliant with them.

So do you come to visit us at our premises or sites?

The visit schedule will be pre-determined in a bespoke service specification, designed for you at the outset by your Lighthouse service advisor.

You will then be allocated a lead Health and Safety consultant who will manage your visits over the duration of the contract.

Unlike some consultancies, our consultants are not given a sales target or asked to see more than one client in one day, ensuring that you receive the quality of service and advice you would expect from a trusted advisor.

Your visit schedule will commence with an audit of your operations, after which a detailed report will be devised.

Your follow up consultancy visits will then be focused on implementing the actions identified in audit visit. This can include a number of services such as:

  • Development of Risk Assessments and Safe Working Procedures
  • Undertaking a Fire Risk Assessment
  • Delivering employee safety training
  • Liaising with stakeholders who want to audit your operations such as insurers, clients or the Health & Safety Executive
  • Delivering surveys such as noise, dust or asbestos management surveys
  • Helping to compile Health and Safety information such as a training matrix or COSHH inventory

So what happens when my consultant isn’t on-site?
