Dust Surveys
Dust exposure can be a major concern for businesses operating woodworking machinery, stonemasonry processes, or anything involving the use of abrasive wheels. Consistent exposure to dust can lead to significant health complications for individuals, including asthma and lung disease.
Furthermore, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 place specific responsibilities on employers to identify the appropriate hazards and implement control measures to prevent or adequately control employees’ exposure to dust.
In order to assess the risks from exposure to dust at your premises you need to determine:
- Who is exposed and to what?
- To how much and how long for?
- From where?
- And how is dust controlled?
It is important to remember that not all dust is visible under normal lighting, and that techniques such as air monitoring, bright light sources and smoke tubes may be required to answer these questions.
Lighthouse Health & Safety consultants have the required competence and qualifications to undertake these techniques on your behalf.
Your consultant will visit your premises to determine dust exposures using the appropriate equipment and analysis techniques.
The results of the survey will determine your workplace exposures, and will be presented along with recommendations on the appropriate control measures to reduce employees’ exposure to dust.
Such controls may include; containment, process control, ventilation control, segregation, health surveillance and Personal Protective Equipment.
