Lack Of First Aid Training Puts Workers At Risk

First Aid Training

What’s Happened

A new study has recently shown that many workplaces lack sufficiently trained first aiders in order to respond effectively in a medical emergency. In this blog, we take a look at what the requirements are and how employers can ensure they provide effective first-aid cover for their employees

Lack of Trained Staff?

A recent St John’s Ambulance survey found that nearly a third of all people asked had been involved in a workplace incident where there was no one present to provide first aid. What’s more, 22% of those asked confirmed they had never received any first aid training, or if they had, it was over 5 years ago (and so would have expired.)

Employers are legally required to ensure that employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or fall ill at work. This involves providing adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities, and personnel. Failing to comply with these requirements can lead to legal consequences and place employees at risk.

First Aid Needs

A first aid needs assessment helps determine what is necessary for a specific workplace. This assessment should consider:

  • The nature of the work and associated hazards.
  • The size of the organisation and the number of employees.
  • The workplace’s history of accidents and illnesses.

Once the needs assessment is complete, employers must ensure that suitable first aid equipment and facilities are available. This typically includes:

  • Well-stocked first aid kits that are easily accessible.
  • Designated first aid rooms for larger workplaces.
  • Clear signage indicating the location of first aid supplies and facilities.

The number and training level of first aiders required depend on the outcome of the needs assessment. Generally, workplaces with higher risks or more employees require more trained first aiders. These individuals should hold a valid certificate of competence in first aid at work or an equivalent qualification. There is also a need to organise refresher training in order to maintain skills throughout the 3 years the certificates are valid.
